Executive Summary

Bowling for a Purpose, Inc. (BFAP, Inc.), pronounced “Bee-Fap”, is a nonprofit organization – 501(c)(3) providing mentoring and tutoring services centered around bowling for middle and high school youth in the Greater Washington, DC area. It is our goal to primarily support homeless and low income youth. By providing academic support and mentoring services, we establish the goal of producing change agents for their communities.  The program will form partnerships with local school districts, the juvenile court system, bowling alleys and other local and national organizations.  BFAP, Inc.’s goal is to foster a commitment to young people that will promote pro-social friendships, strong interpersonal skills, and reassert a sense of hope in the future.

Through repeated failures in the classroom and the development of destructive habits, at-risk young people have lost faith in the possibilities that await them.  Young people must be in a caring, inclusive learning environment that promotes their best effort and reinforces personal respect.

BFAP, Inc. is a program that is in direct response to the growing number of young people that are either falling through the cracks at school, already entangled with the juvenile court system or in a need of assistance in the social arena. The goal is to identify youths who are going to have a turbulent transition to adulthood and offer positive support system to avoid the pitfalls that can derail their lives. The focus is slightly different at each level but the goal remains the same; empower the young person to make positive changes in his/her life while providing the opportunity to build up their academic foundation.

We will focus primarily on students in the middle to high school range. In a 2013 study, HUD reported that over 6,500 individuals were homeless in the Washington, DC boundaries.  Of those individuals counted over 1500 where children.  According to the DC Fiscal Policy Institute, one in four residents of the nation’s capital live below the poverty line.  The estimated total is roughly 133,000 residents.  One major fact is that education and nutrition play a major role in negatively effecting the lives of these citizens.   This demographic has a need and this is the time for this service to be make a change in the local community.

The mentoring program will pair a youth with a mentor. During that time the two will participate in weekly planned activities to strengthen the relationship between the two and improve the young person's confidence and hopefulness.  Mentors will receive continuous training throughout the year and will participate in monthly meeting to report the young person's progress.  Over time, BFAP, Inc. will create a learning environment that will be an invaluable resource to young people, aspiring mentors and the community at large.

Our program incorporates bowling as a core of it draw to provide services to our local youth.   While providing a platform that allows scholars to feel accomplished through an individual effort, they will also have an opportunity to build team comradery through competitive play and team work.  It is with this foundation that the program will incorporate its mentoring and academic component. Through our structured programming, it is our desire to enhance our scholars beyond measure.
